The Ancient Mariners

L-R: Tom Liebert (bari), Ed Headley (bass), Carl Lerman (lead), David Brown (tenor)

A new ad-hoc quartet has been formed, with the express purpose of singing some wonderful sea-faring songs such as Son of the Sea, and performing a humorous skit based on them. We're The Ancient Mariners, consisting of lead (and most ancient skit writer) Carl Lerman, bass Ed Headley, tenor David Brown, and bari Tom Liebert. Tom replaces Carl Cappello who has returned to his "real" quartets, the Four Baritones and Cambrian Explosion. We've been rehearsing at Harrison Middle School and at Carl Lerman's place in the Woods of Canco, and the sound and friendship are good. We plan to sing at any and all singouts where we can this year. If you've got a taste for rum with a dash of seaweed, we're the quartet for you! Aaarrr, Matie!

David Brown sings Tenor. David lives in Raymond with his wife Kathy and has two children in college. David is the tenor section leader for the Portland Downeasters chorus. David is a mechanical engineer and works for an architectural firm in Auburn. He likes cycling, hiking, chain sawing and many other pursuits including transforming into a crazy clown whenever there is a parade!

Lead Carl Lerman is the oldest active Downeaster. He is retired, and lives at the Woods at Canco. Carl has been singing barbershop for many years.

Ed Headley, the most highly recognizable Downeaster due to his long, flowing gray beard, has been singing bass with the Downeasters for many years. A former Navy man, you might say that Ed is a natural choice to sing with the Ancient Mariners, because he is one, by golly! Ed is an engineer, and lives with his wife Janet.

Tom Liebert replaces Carl Cappello as bari. Although Tom has been singing for church choirs for many years, he is a relative newcomer to the barbershop tradition. Tom moved from Gray, ME to Portsmouth, NH but still makes the drive to Yarmouth every Monday night for practice. Tom also sings with the Seacoast Vocal Union barbershop chorus, which practices in Kittery, ME.
