Maine Chorus Declared Northeastern District Champions
The Downeasters Barbershop Chorus (chartered in 1949 by the
Barbershop Harmony Society) was declared
2009
Northeastern District Chorus Champions at a chorus and quartet competition held in Manchester,
CT on October 23rd & 24th. The District is comprised of all the New England States, parts of New York and the Canadian Maritime
Provinces. Sixteen choruses and twenty-six quartets competed in this year's event.
For the first time in its 60-year history, the Downeasters (with members from Saco to Lewiston/Auburn) swept all
Northeastern District award categories, including Most Improved Chorus,
Plateau AA Champions, and overall Chorus Champions. The Downeasters Youth Quartet
$1800 Shoes, all from
Gorham, won the NED Novice Quartet trophy.
The Downeasters will represent the Northeastern District at the
International Convention to be held in Philadelphia,
PA on June 28 - July 4, 2010. The group will embark on a campaign to raise travel funds through paid performances and the
"Singing Waiters" and "Singing Valentines" programs.
In related news, the
Port City Sound seniors quartet (also members of the Downeasters) represented the Northeastern District at the
Midwinter Convention in Tampa, FL on January 29th, 2010.
The Downeasters are actively recruiting new voices, and rehearse every Monday night at Harrison Middle School in
Yarmouth. Talented male singers are encouraged to apply.
