The Downeasters chorus and quartets are members of the Portland Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The chapter was formed in Portland in 1949 and the Society was organized in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1938. The Society numbers nearly 32,000 members and is the largest all-male singing society.

The Portland chapter, oldest in Maine, numbers over fifty members. Several quartets are included and most quartet members also perform in the chapter chorus. The chorus competes twice a year, puts on an annual show with two performances, and sings for organizations and benefits throughout the year. Visitations are made frequently to local nursing homes. The quartets do the same, but generally perform more often than the chorus.
